Wonky Perceptions of Fruit & Veg

Did you know that in 2013 over 40% of all fruit and veg grown in the UK was wasted due to it not being pretty enough? Is this not insane?! Although we have done a lot to reduce this waste over the past few years, with leading supermarkets bringing out wonky produce ranges, there is still a lot more that we can do.

Personally i don't understand why the inperfections of fresh produce was ever hidden from us. It seems silly that there must have been a point at which it was discussed in a board room what passed as being okay for the human eye. Even if some shapes are a bit weird, why can't it still be used in recipies for premade foods or cosmetic products? Noone would care what the lemons looked like before they made it into their cheesecake!

However, all my outrage at this has sparked a new thought... has this censoring of oddly shaped fruit and veg come from/lead to our own need as humans to be asthetically pleasing in shape?

How on earth are we supposed to accept others different shapes and sizes when we don't even accept that of our food! I think we should sell it all. If we are ever to become more self-confident and eco-friendly as a species, we need to stop narrowing our concept of beauty! I am as guilty at this as most; wanting beautiful matching homeware, a perfect body, new clothes and yummy looking food. But we need to think more of the practical use. Things need to do the job they are required for more than they need to look good doing it (looking good is a bonus!) What better way is there to start this change in mindset than getting used to fruit and veg of all shapes and sizes?!
